BULLETPROOF VESTS IST

JSC Institute of Special Technologies RAS in cooperation with few Russian companies manufactures and offers bulletproof vests, armor plates and bulletproof helmets with the best performance characteristic in comparison with the world famous products.

BFS OF THE SOFT ARMOR PANELS IS LESS THAN 8 mm
BFS OF SAP+HAP = 0 mm
TRAUMA = 0
weight of 1 dm²= 55 gram (ballistic pack)

Mission

To deliver safety performance and retain combat readiness of federal police servicemen and special forces from stab, gunshot and shrapnel injury in line with counter‐terrorism.

History

  • IST RAN has supplied over 70.000 vests to various units of law enforcement agencies in Russia (Ministry of Interior, Federal Security Service, National Guard) throughout the past 15 years
  • Since 2012, a fundamentally new generation of body armor has been developed by in‐house ballistic experts and scientists, specializing in composite materials
  • The new generation product line “IST” offers unrivaled safety performance that allows servicemen to retain full combat readiness even after being stricken by gunshot and shrapnel.

Unique product features

  • Large area of level IIIaprotection
  • Lightweight structure allows for functional NIJ IV armour
  • Very low back‐face signature according to NIJ testing

Certification

  • IST RAN bulletproof vests are certified by the national certification system in all classes of protection according to GOST 34286‐2017 and tested in accordance with NIJ Ballistic Resistance 0101.06 and NIJ Stab Resistance 0115.00.
  • In addition to national certification, tests imitating real‐life shrapnel and blunt force trauma were carried out.
  • All testing accounted for following quality indicators:
  • Protection against bullet and knife penetration;
  • Protection from the real pieces of field ordnance (shrapnel);
  • Protection from blunt force trauma;
  • 5 year product warranty;
  • Ergonomic performance.

Back-face signature

Virtually all ballistic vests standards regulate the following key parameters:

1.Non‐penetrationof the projectile, i.e. ballistic resistance

2.Back‐face signature (BFS) generated by the projectile, measured in mm, which determines the severity of the injury after blunt‐force trauma, affecting combat capability and the need for hospital admittance of the victim.

All standards have zero‐tolerance for penetration from several shots, as it is the main protection parameter.

The back‐face signature however, is treated differently: the most widely accepted standard for ballistic protection is the U.S. NIJ, which allows for a 44mm BFS, yet German technical regulations allow for 18‐22mm.

Extended ballistic test results

  • IST vests are designed with real‐life duty conditions in mind which means resistance to actual shrapnel,
  • low weight and protection from blunt‐force trauma.
  • Official standards offer only shrapnel tests with ball‐style fragments weighing 1,05g 6,35mm in
  • diameter, which are not representative of the real scenarios
  • IST RAN conducted voluntary tests in the field to simulate striking by elements of size 10‐15mm from
  • anti‐personnel mines PM‐4, hand grenades PGN, RGO, under‐barrel grenades VOG‐17, VOG‐25, mortar
  • fire with high‐explosive fragmenting ammo of caliber 82‐120mm and artillery ammo of caliber 76,2‐
  • 122mm
  • Excellent result were achieved – non‐penetration of the vest
